Those Ride P.A. Systems

Most of the ride P.A.’s were an Audio Telex DI-50 amp made in Silverwater.

Audio Telex “Bulletproof” DI-50 50W Amplifier

They were a good robust amp that seldom failed. I know some of the ride operators actually tried to break them. The easiest thing to break was the ride P.A. microphones. If you unscrewed the ball part of the mic, and pulled the internal capsule out, it would usually break the fine wires inside. These were easy to repair unless part of the capsule was damaged in the process. I used to order about 20 replacement capsules a year, and about 10 new mic’s to replace those that became un-repairable. My solution for these “Fiddlers” was to drill two holes in the mic cases and put in two screws, nice and tight, which stopped people from taking them apart.
As time went on, I found a robust C.B. Style microphone that really lasted well.
When I first arrived, there were many broken microphone leads. There were no spares by then, just broken ones, so I spent part of each day repairing them, in some cases cutting them in two, and making shorter ride mic leads from a few extra long ones. The purchasing officer balked when I wanted to buy a $300 bulk roll of quality mic lead. I told him it was better than having a ride shut down because the P.A. wasn’t working or cancelling a show but still having to pay the performers & crew. I got my wire and connectors the next week.
